Fish hydrolysate is an awesome product for promoting plant growth. It’s high in Nitrogen, can be naturally produced, and is an awesome food for microbes. Fungi love it and it is easily produced at home. We use it as straight fertiliser, animal supplement and an ingredient in compost teas (Fungi: Bacteria balanced- Fungi orientated). Fish hydrolysate is composed of fish and glucose based sugars and uses lacto bacillus to break everything down using enzymes. Fish hydryolysate doesn’t undergo the heating and skimming process that you get with fish emulsion products. Heating breaks down beneficial amino acid chains and this cold process also retains the fats and oils that microbes love. How to make it; 1. Get some fish, you might as well use fish discards like fish heads, guts, etc. We use whole fish as there are naturally wider range of nutrients present. 2. Cut fish into chunks then either blend or run through a meat mincer. The finer the fish bits, the more effective the fermentation. 3. Add water. We're adding 3 parts water to 1 part ferment material. (1litre fish mince: 3 litre water) ALWAYS USE NON-CHLORINATED WATER. Chlorine kills microbes. 4. Add 3:1 Fish: Sugar. Sugarcane molasses or Raw (unrefined/ unbleached) sugar is good. 5. Add lacto bacilli to blended fish mixture. Approx. 2tbsp per L. We used liquid from a Lacto ferment, eg, Kimchi/ Sauerkraut. 6. Now you have liquefied fish, sugar, and lacto. Pour this mixture into a container to ferment. Cover with a cloth/ mesh to stop insects, etc. The process takes anywhere from 2 weeks to over a month. You know its finished by the smell. During fermentation there is a pungent smell, but once completed there should be little more than a faint vinegar smell. 7. Transfer it to a smaller container. How to use; Mix 0.5tbsp/litre for applications. Plants · Use as a soil drench as opposed to foliar spray. · Inoculate compost to boost fungal population. · Use in compost teas to boost fungal growth, add Nitrogen. Use at ¼ strength for this application · Mix in water when watering plants, as a natural fish fertilizer and to enhance populations of micro-organisms in the soil Animals · Mix with water for an effective protein/lacto boost for your animals. Thanks for the great info. I'm curious why you state that the fish hydroslate should be used " as a soil drench as opposed to foliar spray."

There is no need to under go such machinations, simply bury a fish

Its not easy to apply whole fish to a large area, goodluck digging up even 100 sqm of land to bury fish, its actually very bad for the soil biology when land is dug up, making hydrolysate is far easier and just as effective

Why not just give whole fresh fish just like nature intended? Why add garbage? The body doesn't require garbage to thrive, and why does garbage cost so much? Garbage in, garbage out. The garbage out part is all the symptoms dogs get from "food", better said, nonfood. There is nothing "natural" in highly processed food or garbage. Nothing good comes from it. If you or your dog eats processed food, expect to become sick, gradually, it is a slow death.

I don't want some fishy garden. Who knows what other pests that may attract. Although apparently a great plant food. My purposes would be mainly fungi/microbe food. A garden should already have plenty of goodness to make it through the summer. Without stinking.

Living next to forest and its creatures and having a dog in the farm, I'm pretty confident that any fish buried in the soils here in autumn won't even have a trace left come the next spring. Tried a few times, and it seems that there is always someone hungry enough to dig them up. Better to feed it to fungi and not the rotting bacteria..

Be had a similar recipe brewing for over 2 months and it still stinks pretty bad. Observing under microscope I see a lot of writhing nematodes and not much else. I can not identify the nematodes. Any suggestions? I’d like to be done stirring it every two days already 😂

If you have nematodes, you have bacteria… and lots of them, as that’s what the nems eat. If you are following the fermenting process, you should not be stirring it. You are adding oxygen to what is supposed to be an anaerobic process..

Thank you for this awesome recipe! I followed it to the T ... however didn't quite have LAB's available .. so used a small measure of kefir culture .. in less than a week I have the most interesting brew... no stinky fish smell .. but rather one that smells of slightly wet kelp seaweed. It's still bubbling away and when I stir it, I see the oil coating the side of the bucket! #stoked will test it after 2 weeks and a month on some plants and watch their reactions :-)

Or I could make it myself and not pay for what should be free. In addition I won’t be relying on fossil fuels for the processing and shipping. Local fish waste. Some molasses. 30-50 minutes of work. And enough fish fertilizer for an entire year.

Does anyone know the exact reason why fish oils in fish hydrolysate are really good for fungal growth? Is it a fungal food? If so what in the oil content are the fungi consuming? Or is it just a medium for fungi to attach to/grow on?

My attempt at this was an utter failure too. Where fungus mold on top with more clear liquid beneat, and a thin botto layer.. and it stunk so badly!!! I bottled some but am going to dispose of it. Anything that smells that bad cannot be good for anything!

I am wondering about temperatures for the fish hydrolysate. When it is fermenting should it be kept above or below a certain temperature? Then when storing it the same questions should it be kept above or below a certain temperature

Fish hydrolysate needs to be prepared under anaerobic environment for proper hydrolyzation. The container needs to have an airlock.
