Natural Swimming pool practicum
26th Jul - 1st Aug 2020
LIMITED TO 8 PARTICIPANTS only
Ever since we moved to the farm we had set aside our front lawn to an exciting project. Richard was keen to replicate his successful Jean Pain compost experience to create a 70m3 pile to heat the home and nursery right on the front yard. Yohanna dreamt of a perennial garden, enclosing a private space from the road, making a safe and interesting place for our children that wasn't simply a lawn. Now we have decided to construct a natural swimming pool, surrounded by a perennial garden. Before we even moved onto the farm we had a swimming pond in the design planning, an enjoyable way of washing and relaxing for the folks who come to this amazing place. Since we have an incredible sauna fired up every day, and a beautiful beach at our local lake, this never became a necessity. Now we wish to build a more private pool for the household, and so this presents a fairly unique opportunity to learn by doing; creating a natural swimming pool from scratch.

Course structure
As a side project in a busy and short farming season up here at 59°N, you will have opportunity to join morning chores every day if you wish. This is the time we move and feed animals and prepare beds, transplant and harvest in the no-dig market gardens. Our farm is one of the beacons of regenerative agriculture, and there is plenty going on around the farm that will engage and inspire the participants. We will have some evening time to discuss aspects of farming as you wish.
You are welcome to join us early on the 25th July for our Open Day, where we offer a guided tour of the farm. In the past we have received up to 300 people from all over Europe for this tour. The course will begin on Sunday 26th and run through until Saturday the 1st, with people leaving in the morning of Sunday 2nd August.
The course will be very much hands-on, with the aim of completing the basic build and hopefully even planting out the regeneration zones of the pond. It will involve physical and co-ordinated work, with constant whiteboard sessions in the work site to ensure everyone is clear of the build process and decision-making. In light of the varied weather, we may begin the excavation before hand in order to get the most out of our time together. The detailed landscaping and surrounding perennial plantings are unlikely to fit into our time frame, but everything we do will all be documented and made available to you. We will do all we can together, and we are known for getting things done!
