Welcome to this extremely special 4 day masterclass
20th-23rd AUGUST 2020
Join us for this 4 day intensive with Richard Perkins and very special guest Joel Salatin.
After a farm tour and introduction, we will be delving deep into the heart of what it takes to regenerate land and habitats whilst creating thriving local business with integrity food. We want to tailor this learning opportunity to your personal needs, and have decided to move away from simply presenting our strategies and approaches for a more nuanced and discussion-based approach. Small-scale diversified farms offer unprecedented learning outcomes at the same time as creating meaningful work and respectable livelihood. We want to use this time to discuss the less 'talked about' issues and subjects: up close and personal.

Training Format
With over 70 combined years of working in their fields, Joel and Richard will be sharing their direct field-based experience via their shared passion for regenerative agriculture and living. This event will inform you of best practices and how to get started smart, at any scale. There's never been a better time to get into farming, and both Joel and Richard have dedicated their lives to supporting many more people getting started with growing. This workshop will be a blend of class and field study, amidst living examples at the start of the short production season here at Ridgedale. There is scope to gain insight into all the operations at our farm, as well as discuss a diverse range of topics, as outlined below. We'll be looking at tools, techniques and infrastructure as well as discussing the 'backend' of what it takes to make it all work smoothly; the sales, planning, decision making and business mindset that are vital for success regardless of place and circumstance. We will also explore the personal, social and cultural elements of family farming. This training will be really interactive and we will be creating space for answering your questions from our diverse experiences.
Joel Salatin calls himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer. Others like him call him the most famous farmer in the world, the high priest of the pasture, and the most eclectic thinker from Virginia since Thomas Jefferson. Those who don’t like him call him a bio-terrorist, Typhoid Mary, charlatan, and starvation advocate. He co-owns, with his family, Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia. Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore’s Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmers’ market with salad bar beef, pigaerator pork, pastured poultry, and forestry products. When he’s not on the road speaking, he’s at home on the farm, keeping the callouses on his hands and dirt under his fingernails, mentoring young people, inspiring visitors, and promoting local, regenerative food and farming systems. With a room full of debate trophies from high school and college days, 12 published books, and a thriving multi-generational family farm, he draws on a lifetime of food, farming and fantasy to entertain and inspire audiences around the world. He’s as comfortable moving cows in a pasture as addressing CEOs in a Wall Street business conference.
Richard is an innovative farmer and internationally regarded teacher and influencer. He is author of the highest ever crowdsourced-funded book about farming, Regenerative Agriculture, and Making Small Farms Work. He has grown food since his teenage years, and has worked professionally in every major climate zone across several continents consulting to projects, farms and industry. He is known for his pragmatic no-nonsense approach to profitable system design. Richard pioneered a very successful 3-month farm accelerator program, has led over 50 solo Permaculture Design Course's (with a focus on agricultural production), as well as countless other specialist courses, practicums and seminars. Richard's project work includes design and site visits on over 200 varied projects in various climatic zones as well as contributing to over 1000 course participants’ site plans. Richard has had the honour to run the first internationally accredited regenerative agriculture training programs in Sweden, Dominican Republic, Poland, Luxembourg, Poland, Belarus, Croatia, Latvia, Denmark and Finland. As an influencer, Richard’s Youtube channel has a highly focused following, and his approach to No-Dig (no till) market gardening and pastured poultry production has been emulated by thousands of people in all corners of the globe.

TOPICS We'd like to address
We have decided that we would like to keep this training fresh and avoid regurgitation of materials people can find online. We want to offer something more conversational, nuanced and granular. An extended conversation, if you like. Of course we will happily discuss best practices for producing pastured ruminants and poultry, agroforestry, market gardening, on-farm processing, etc, but here are some ideas based on our own interests and feedback for topics to investigate together;

Evenings are generally split between sauna, bonfire, discussions, less formal lectures, walks or swims in the beautiful surroundings. It is up to us, and we can decide together how best to use our time together.

OUR FOOD POLICY
- We eat a balanced diet of meat, dairy, eggs, vegetables and whole foods at the farm. We supply farm raised and grown produce and 100% organic whole foods that we buy in. The course is fully catered, with dinner on the Sunday and breakfast on Friday morning.
- We operate a one meal policy at the farm. Bear in mind we are a meat producing farm that also slaughters animals here on the farm. We regularly use stock, dairy, eggs and meat in meals as well as eating sourdough breads we bake and other ingredients with gluten. Whilst vegetarian options are often available, we cannot always guarantee stock or dairy is not used in cooking in small amounts, and cannot cater for individual needs.
