2022 Positions at ridgedale

Homesteading together

Beginning of May to mid september (For Europeans only!)

Applications open until 10th Feb 2022

Ridgedale is changing...

2022 marks a new chapter at Ridgedale. This year Richard and the kids are homesteading, and look forward to an easeful and fun summer with a few awesome people. Commercial operations have been fully put down, and so Richard is inviting folks who would like to spend the season growing and raising their own food in a relaxed way together. Please note, the farm will not be running in the way it has in the past, it will not be like what you might have been used to if you followed us on Youtube, for example. There will only be a very small number of animals and the gardens will be scaled down dramatically. Think a couple of cows, a small flock of sheep, a couple dozen hens and maybe a batch of broilers for our food supply. Please note, Richard will not be serving in a teacher role, or creating so much structure for other's; he will be taking it very easy and will also be busy a bunch of time each day with his children, renovating and painting the buildings, general maintenance as well as taking care of other properties and running courses outside the country for a few weeks during the season. It's important that people chose to apply for the shared experience, and not come here with unrealistic expectations of either Richard or what the farm offers.

It is an opportunity for like-minded people (up to 4 adults, an employee and Richard and his children) to have a relaxed summer in a wonderful place, living somewhat independently but interested in sharing in the basic tasks of planting trees, moving animals, collecting eggs, tending gardens and preparing food together. Sometimes sharing fireside stories and taking saunas, enjoying the surrounding nature and having a lot of free time. The structure and pace will be very relaxed, we will organise daily farm tasks in a simple way, and there will be space for projects here and there if there is interest. What we produce and grow is kind of up to the group, although Richard has prepared a seed order and has basic plans for livestock to supply our needs. The overall aim is to create a supportive co-created communal feeling; something many of us have been missing to some degree these last couple of years.

The workload will be casual and there is room for your own creative pursuits and leisure activities. The aim is to create a really nice atmosphere and live well by helping each other with fun work supplying for our own needs. It would especially suit people who work online, or want to share the responsibilities of children, and are happy keeping themselves occupied a lot of the time. It is important that you are sociable, easeful and communicative and enjoy hanging out with others. You should also be independent and happy with a bunch of time left to your own direction!

Eating at the farm

The farm supplies a balanced diet of meat, dairy, eggs, vegetables and whole foods. Richard supplies farm raised/grown produce and 100% organic whole foods that we will buy in. During any courses meals are fully catered by a farm chef. The rest of the time, people will cook together or in rotation, with the basic expectation that everyone takes turns in basic responsibilities. Bear in mind Ridgedale is a meat producing farm and we also slaughter animals here on the farm. If you are not comfortable with any of this it is probably not wise to apply.

Staying at the farm

There are four simple rooms in the magazine; really very simple and in very close proximity to each other. We light the sauna and bathtub daily for washing, and have an outdoor sink with hot and cold water. We have fiber optic internet with a repeater that works in the main tipi space. You can use a washing machine weekly. We have a shared kitchen in a cabin, as well as space for dining when it's cold. In the summer we tend to eat outside under the tipi's.

Receiving visitors during your stay

  • Visitations should be discussed well ahead of time with the group
  • Your visitors are required to contribute 150 kr per day to cover their basic costs.
  • You can use the farm vehicle to pick up/drop off/ visit places (25 kr/km)
